Short answer

No appetite in the first trimester can accompany nausea and hormonal change, so focus on frequent tolerable foods, fluids, and warning signs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why appetite may fall

Early pregnancy can change taste, smell, digestion, and tolerance for foods. Nausea, vomiting, tiredness, reflux, or emotional strain may make eating unappealing. A reduced appetite is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can also occur with infections such as influenza, COVID-19, gastroenteritis, or hepatitis, and with conditions that cause stomach discomfort. The key concern is whether you can drink, keep food down, and continue normal daily activities.

Keeping intake manageable

Try small portions at regular intervals rather than waiting for hunger. Plain, cool, or dry foods may be easier if smells trigger nausea; choose nourishing options you tolerate and add variety gradually. Keep water nearby and take frequent sips. Some people manage fluids better between meals. Rest, fresh air, and avoiding strong food smells can help. Continue prenatal supplements only as advised, and ask your maternity clinician about alternatives if a supplement worsens nausea. Do not start appetite stimulants or herbal products without medical advice.

When to seek care

Contact your clinician if low appetite persists, you are losing weight, urinating much less, or cannot maintain ordinary fluids and food. Seek urgent help for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit, breathing difficulty, or signs of dehydration. Fever, diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or a new low mood with loss of interest also warrants prompt assessment.

Questions for your maternity team

Ask how to manage nausea, whether your hydration is adequate, and which foods, supplements, or medicines are suitable if appetite remains low.
