First period after D&C that starts and stops

A D&C removes tissue from inside the uterus, and the lining may need time to rebuild before cycles look familiar. The first bleed can be lighter, heavier, delayed, or intermittent. Spotting from healing may also be mistaken for a period. If periods remain absent or irregular, possible explanations include pregnancy, hormonal conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Menopause, or Premature Ovarian Insufficiency. Turner Syndrome is another condition that can affect ovarian function, depending on a person’s medical history.

Write down each day of bleeding and spotting, the flow, cramps, discharge, and any temperature. Use pads if you are still recovering and follow the procedure team’s advice about internal products, sex, and exercise. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible. Arrange follow-up if bleeding repeatedly stops and restarts, your pain is increasing, or your period does not return as expected; the clinician may consider an examination, pregnancy testing, or hormone assessment.

Seek urgent help for rapidly heavy bleeding, faintness, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, chills, or foul-smelling discharge. Contact your clinician promptly if you have ongoing bleeding with pain, or if periods remain absent after the timeframe your procedure team gave you. Do not assume stop-start bleeding is harmless when you feel unwell.

Ask whether your pattern fits normal recovery, when menstruation should be expected, and whether retained tissue, infection, pregnancy, or a hormonal cause needs checking. Ask how your D&C reason affects follow-up and whether you need a scan or blood tests.
