What should you know about a first mRNA vaccine?

The messenger RNA in the vaccine is read briefly by cells so they can make a harmless piece related to the target germ. The immune system responds to that piece and then breaks down the message. The mRNA does not enter the cell nucleus and cannot alter a person’s genetic code. Protection is not immediate, and the recommended course may include another dose.

Bring your vaccination history and tell the clinician about previous allergic reactions, current illness, pregnancy, immune conditions and medicines. Stay for the observation period advised at the vaccination site. Arm tenderness, fatigue, headache, chills or fever may occur for a short time. Rest, drink fluids if appropriate, and use symptom relief only as advised for you.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, widespread hives, fainting, chest pain or severe symptoms after vaccination. Contact a clinician if fever persists, symptoms are worsening, or you are concerned about a new symptom. A vaccine reaction should not be assumed to explain every serious complaint.
