Fingers suddenly stiff: what to know

Short answer

Sudden finger stiffness deserves attention because it may follow injury, swelling, tendon irritation, or inflammation; severe pain, colour change, numbness, or fever makes prompt assessment more important.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be happening

A missed knock, awkward grip, or repetitive task can irritate a joint or tendon. A finger that catches or locks can occur with Trigger Finger. A sudden flare of swelling in several joints can occur with Rheumatoid Arthritis, while Hand Osteoarthritis more often causes activity-related joint symptoms. Dupuytren's Contracture generally changes finger straightening gradually rather than appearing suddenly. The exact starting time, affected finger, and ability to move are valuable details for a clinician.

What to do first

Stop the activity that brought on symptoms and remove rings. Keep the hand supported and elevated if it is swollen. Use a wrapped cool pack after a recent injury, and make only small, comfortable movements; do not repeatedly test a painful catch. Avoid forcing, deep massage, or heat over a fresh injury. Note any wound, bite, impact, unusual position, numbness, or change in colour. If symptoms do not settle promptly or movement remains restricted, arrange an examination.

Warning signs

Get urgent help for a finger that is deformed, trapped in one position, blue or pale, cold, numb, or impossible to move. Prompt assessment is also needed for rapidly spreading redness, a hot swollen finger, fever, severe pain, or a cut or bite near a joint or tendon. Even without these signs, seek care after a significant impact or if sudden stiffness continues.

Ask at the appointment

Could this be a tendon injury, joint injury, or inflammation? Do I need imaging or temporary support? Which movements are safe while it settles? What symptoms should trigger immediate reassessment?

Questions people ask

Is sudden stiffness always an emergency?

No, but sudden loss of movement or stiffness with severe pain, colour change, numbness, fever, or deformity needs urgent assessment.

Should I apply heat straight away?

Cooling is generally more suitable after a fresh injury; avoid heat over a hot or rapidly swollen finger until it has been assessed.
