Finger ECG machines: what should you know?

An ECG records electrical activity as the heart beats. A finger device uses sensors touched by one or both hands and usually produces a limited tracing. It may help capture an irregular rhythm during symptoms, but it cannot show every heart problem and a normal-looking recording does not explain all chest symptoms. Movement, dry skin, poor contact or electrical interference can make the tracing difficult to read. The recording is evidence for assessment, not a diagnosis by itself.

Sit still, rest your hands, follow the device instructions and keep the sensors clean. Note the time, symptoms, activity and medicines when you record. Save or share the tracing in the format your clinician can open. Do not repeatedly test yourself instead of seeking care for chest pain, fainting or severe breathlessness. A clinician may recommend a standard ECG or longer monitoring if episodes are intermittent.

Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, collapse, new weakness on one side, or fainting with palpitations. Arrange medical review for repeated fast or irregular beats, dizziness or a device result labelled abnormal. Bring the device or recording to the appointment if possible.
