Fine biopsy needle: what to know

Fine-needle aspiration collects loose cells or fluid; it is different from a core biopsy, which removes a small cylinder of tissue. A clinician may use touch, ultrasound, or another scan to guide the needle to the intended area. The laboratory can assess cell appearance, and additional tests such as immunohistochemistry may help identify the cell type.

A sample can be inadequate, unclear, or show a finding that needs confirmation. A result is interpreted alongside examination and imaging, such as an MRI scan, rather than in isolation. The procedure itself does not determine the whole treatment plan.

Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, bleeding problems, pregnancy, and previous reactions to procedures. Follow the specific instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines. During sampling, you may feel pressure or a brief sharp sensation. Mild tenderness or bruising can occur afterward; keep the area clean and follow the given dressing instructions.

Ask when the result is expected and who will explain it. If cancer is identified, genomic tumour profiling may be discussed when it could help select systemic treatment such as chemotherapy or another medicine.

Contact the procedure team promptly for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing swelling, spreading redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or new shortness of breath. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Use only the pain relief recommended for you.
