Fever with pink eye

Conjunctivitis causes redness and irritation of the surface covering the eye. Viral illness can bring fever and watery discharge, while bacterial conjunctivitis may cause thicker discharge and eyelids that stick together. Allergy tends to cause prominent itching and usually does not cause fever. Wash hands before and after touching the face, avoid rubbing the eyes, and use a clean warm compress for crusting. Do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics, or eye drops. Pause contact lens use until a clinician says it is safe, and discard disposable lenses or contaminated solutions as advised. Seek urgent assessment for moderate or severe eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, marked swelling, injury, or difficulty moving the eye. Get prompt advice when a newborn is affected, symptoms worsen quickly, or fever accompanies a very unwell appearance. Contact a clinician if discharge persists, symptoms are not improving, or contact lenses were worn during the illness.

Ask whether both eyes are involved, whether the pattern suggests a contagious cause, and when work, school, or lens use can resume. Mention contact lens type, discharge colour, pain, light sensitivity, and any vision change.
