What should you know about fever, dizziness, and headache?

Fever can increase fluid needs, while sweating, vomiting, or poor drinking can reduce fluid volume. That combination may cause light-headedness when standing and can intensify a headache. Respiratory infections such as Common Cold or COVID-19 may also produce fever and head discomfort.

Dizziness can mean light-headedness, a feeling of spinning, or unsteadiness; these are not interchangeable. Tell a clinician which sensation you have, whether it follows standing or head movement, and whether you have weakness, vision change, speech difficulty, neck stiffness, or repeated vomiting.

Sit or lie down when dizzy, rise slowly, and avoid driving, heights, and machinery. Sip fluids regularly and rest somewhere cool. If you have diabetes or take medicines that affect blood pressure, follow your personal sick-day plan and seek advice if you cannot eat or drink normally.

Write down the temperature, timing of the headache, triggers for dizziness, recent illness or travel, medicines taken, and how often you urinate. These details help separate fluid loss from an infection or another cause.

Call emergency services for fainting, new weakness on one side, trouble speaking, severe confusion, a seizure, a sudden severe headache, a stiff neck, trouble breathing, chest pain, or inability to walk safely. Do not drive yourself if you are severely dizzy.

Arrange prompt medical review when symptoms persist, worsen, follow a head injury, or come with repeated vomiting, very little urine, or severe dehydration. People who are pregnant, very young, older, or immunocompromised should ask for advice earlier.
