How Are Fever and Chills Treated?

Fever and chills are symptoms rather than a single illness. A viral infection such as influenza may improve with supportive care, while a bacterial infection may need a prescription treatment chosen after assessment. Kidney infection, pneumonia, and sepsis can require urgent clinical care. Malaria and dengue fever need specific medical evaluation, particularly after travel or mosquito exposure.

Antibiotics do not treat viral infections and should not be started from leftover medicine. The right treatment can depend on your age, pregnancy status, other conditions, medicines, allergies, hydration, and examination findings.

Rest and take frequent drinks unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. Use light layers and adjust the room for comfort; heavy blankets can make overheating worse after the chills pass. A thermometer can help you track the pattern. If you use a fever-reducing medicine, follow its package directions, avoid duplicate ingredients in combination products, and ask a pharmacist or clinician if you have a long-term condition or take regular medicine.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are not settling, keep returning, or are accompanied by cough, breathlessness, painful urination, back pain, rash, vomiting, or recent travel. You may need testing so treatment is directed at the source rather than the temperature alone.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, seizure, severe weakness, blue or grey lips, a stiff neck, or a rapidly spreading rash. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for a very young infant with fever, sudden deterioration in an older adult, or illness in someone with reduced immune protection. Do not delay care because a fever medicine temporarily lowers the temperature.
