Fever and chills during your period

Fever and chills during a period should not be dismissed as menstrual symptoms, especially when they are new or intense. Hormonal changes may cause temperature sensations, sweating or feeling cold, but a measured fever can point to infection or another illness.

Note whether the fever begins before bleeding, during it or after it, and whether it settles as the period ends. Cramps and tiredness can overlap with Influenza, while pelvic pain, unusual discharge or pain with sex needs assessment. Burning urine or flank pain can occur with a Urinary Tract Infection or Kidney Infection. Travel and insect exposure may make Malaria or Dengue Fever relevant. A period does not protect against common infections such as Pneumonia.

Measure your temperature rather than relying on feeling hot or cold. Rest, drink fluids and use a warm pack for ordinary cramps if it feels comfortable. Follow medicine directions carefully, and check with a pharmacist before taking an anti-inflammatory if you have stomach, kidney or bleeding problems, take blood thinners, or might be pregnant. Record bleeding, pain, discharge, urinary symptoms and temperature.

Arrange prompt care for a fever that continues, keeps returning, or occurs with worsening pelvic pain, foul-smelling discharge, vomiting, faintness or feeling very unwell. Emergency help is needed for confusion, difficulty breathing, collapse, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Fever with heavy bleeding, possible pregnancy, or severe one-sided pain also deserves urgent assessment rather than self-treatment.

Ask whether the timing suggests an infection, which examination or urine tests may help, and which pain or fever medicines are appropriate with your health history.
