Fever and body aches: possible causes and next steps

Fever is a rise in body temperature while body aches can result from immune chemicals affecting muscles and joints. Viral illnesses such as Influenza and COVID-19 commonly present with this combination. Travel, insect exposure, persistent symptoms, medicines, and long-term conditions can change the assessment; symptoms alone cannot identify one cause.

Rest and sip water or an oral rehydration drink. Measure your temperature, note when the aches began, and watch urine output, alertness, breathing, and any new symptoms. Light clothing and a comfortable room may help. Follow medicine directions carefully, avoid taking two products with the same ingredient, and stay home from close contact while feverish.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, a seizure, fainting, blue or grey lips, severe dehydration, or a rapidly worsening illness. Arrange prompt assessment for a severe headache with neck stiffness, a new unusual rash, repeated vomiting, marked weakness, or fever that does not settle. Mention recent travel to a malaria area or mosquito exposure, especially when chills recur.
