What should you know about a fetal ECG machine?

An ECG machine detects tiny electrical signals produced as the heart beats and displays them as a tracing. Sticky electrodes are placed on the chest and sometimes the limbs. The test does not send electricity into the body, and the tracing is reviewed alongside symptoms, examination findings, pregnancy history, and medicines.

Fetal wellbeing is usually assessed with pregnancy-specific monitoring arranged by the maternity team. A maternal ECG may be requested when palpitations, fainting, chest discomfort, breathlessness, or a known heart condition needs assessment. An abnormal tracing is a finding to discuss, not a diagnosis by itself.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, keep the skin free from creams where electrodes will be placed, and tell the clinician that you are pregnant. Mention any medicines, heart history, implanted device, or adhesive sensitivity. Remain still and breathe normally while the tracing is recorded; the procedure is generally brief, although removing electrodes can tug on hair or irritate sensitive skin.

Seek urgent medical help for chest pressure or pain that is severe or persistent, severe difficulty breathing, collapse, new confusion, or a fast or irregular heartbeat with weakness or fainting. During pregnancy, contact your maternity service promptly for reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, fluid loss, or regular painful contractions, even if an ECG has been planned.

Ask why the ECG is recommended, whether it is assessing your heart or the baby, how the tracing will be interpreted, and whether you need further monitoring. You can also ask when results will be available and which symptoms should prompt immediate review.
