A thin flexible instrument passes through the urethra into the bladder, usually after local anaesthetic gel is applied. The clinician views the urethra and bladder lining for inflammation, bleeding, stones, unusual areas or a possible tumour. A small sample or another procedure may be discussed if an area needs further testing.

You may feel pressure, an urge to urinate or brief stinging. The experience varies, and staff can pause to address discomfort. A cystoscopy can support evaluation of bladder cancer, but a normal-looking lining does not answer every urinary question.

Follow instructions about medicines, allergies and urine infection symptoms. After the examination, drink fluids as advised and expect that mild burning or a small amount of blood may occur briefly. Ask when normal activities can resume and when results will be available.

If the examination finds a concerning area, follow-up may involve biopsy, imaging or a treatment discussion. Keep a record of urinary frequency, pain, blood or difficulty passing urine, because these details help interpret the findings.

Contact the clinical team urgently for inability to pass urine, heavy or persistent bleeding, fever, chills, worsening lower abdominal pain, or feeling increasingly unwell. These symptoms can indicate a complication or infection that needs assessment.
