What should you know about feet legs swelling?

Short answer
Feet and legs may swell when fluid collects in the tissues, and the cause can range from prolonged standing to a vein, heart, kidney, or other health problem.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Medical term
- Oedema is fluid buildup in body tissues.
- Useful observation
- Record whether one or both legs are swollen and when it started.
- Urgent warning
- Breathlessness or sudden one-sided painful swelling needs prompt care.
What feet and leg swelling can mean
Swelling, also called oedema, can affect one or both legs. It may leave a tight feeling, make shoes or socks feel uncomfortable, or leave a temporary dent after pressure. Heat, long periods of sitting or standing, salty meals, pregnancy, and some medicines can contribute.
Swelling that keeps returning or does not settle may be linked to reduced blood flow in the leg veins, including Varicose Veins. A breast or leg symptom does not identify a single diagnosis by itself; clinicians consider its timing, distribution, skin changes, pain, breathlessness, and your medical history. Conditions such as Heart Failure or Chronic Kidney Disease can also cause fluid retention. Obesity may increase pressure on the veins and make leg swelling more likely.
Note whether the swelling began suddenly, whether it is one-sided, and whether it improves after resting with the legs raised. These details help a clinician decide whether you need examination, blood tests, an ultrasound, or another assessment.
What you can do
If the swelling is mild and follows a long journey or a day on your feet, change position regularly, take gentle walks, and rest with your legs raised. Avoid tight socks or footwear, protect swollen skin from cuts, and keep the skin moisturised. Do not stop a prescribed medicine or start compression socks without checking with a healthcare professional, especially if the swelling is new or one-sided.
Arrange a medical appointment if swelling persists, recurs, gradually worsens, or comes with aching, visible veins, skin colour changes, or reduced mobility. Bring a list of medicines and note recent travel, surgery, injury, pregnancy, and any changes in urination or breathing.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency help for swelling with sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, coughing blood, or severe weakness. Get urgent medical assessment for a suddenly swollen, painful, warm, or red leg, particularly when the change affects one side. These signs can indicate a circulation problem or another condition that needs prompt treatment.
Contact a clinician promptly if swelling is rapidly increasing, the skin is blistered or leaking fluid, you have a fever, or you are passing much less urine than usual. Do not wait for home measures to work when swelling is accompanied by breathing difficulty.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could my medicines, veins, heart, or kidneys be contributing? What symptoms should make me seek urgent help? Is walking, leg elevation, or compression suitable for me? Do I need tests, and how should I monitor changes at home?

Questions people ask
Can sitting or standing cause swollen feet?
Yes. Staying in one position can slow circulation and allow fluid to collect around the ankles. Movement and leg elevation may help mild, temporary swelling.
Should I massage a swollen leg?
Avoid vigorous massage until a clinician has assessed sudden, painful, warm, or one-sided swelling, because those features can reflect a circulation problem.
When should persistent swelling be checked?
Book an appointment when swelling keeps returning, does not improve, or is accompanied by pain, skin changes, reduced urination, or breathing symptoms.
