Feeling like needles in your hand

Tingling can happen when a wrist, elbow, or neck position briefly presses on a nerve, then settles after movement. Repeated hand use or nerve compression can make it recur. Peripheral neuropathy may affect sensation in the hands and feet; Type 2 Diabetes and Vitamin B12 Deficiency are possible contributors. Hypothyroidism can also be associated with nerve symptoms. Fast breathing during panic or anxiety may cause tingling around the hands or mouth. A sudden symptom with weakness or speech or vision change can indicate Stroke or a Transient Ischaemic Attack; the tingling itself does not establish either diagnosis.

Change position, gently move the fingers and wrist, and avoid leaning on the elbow or sleeping on the hand. Protect numb skin from heat, cuts, and pressure. Note whether the feeling is on one side, which fingers are involved, how long it lasts, and whether neck pain, weakness, dizziness, or anxiety occurs. Book an assessment if it persists, spreads, disrupts sleep, or affects grip.

Call emergency services for sudden tingling with facial drooping, arm weakness, trouble speaking, new severe dizziness, or loss of balance. Seek urgent help after a significant injury, or if the hand becomes blue, very painful, or unusable. Recurrent or gradually worsening symptoms need a timely appointment even without emergency signs.

Ask whether the distribution suggests a trapped nerve and whether you need checks for glucose, thyroid function, Vitamin B12, or other causes. Bring a list of medicines and describe your work, sleep position, and any change in strength or coordination.
