Feeling dizzy after a blood test

A needle, the sight of blood, anxiety, pain, standing quickly, fasting, dehydration, or a naturally strong fainting response can trigger light-headedness. Some people feel warm, clammy, nauseated, or briefly lose consciousness. The amount collected in a routine blood test is small, but your body may still react to the procedure. Dizziness that began before the test, lasts much longer than expected, or keeps returning may have another cause. Your clinician may consider symptoms and test results related to conditions such as [Anaemia](/conditions/anaemia/), rather than assuming the blood draw itself explains everything.

Tell the phlebotomist immediately, then sit or lie down with support until the feeling passes. Rise slowly, drink water, and eat a snack if you were allowed to eat and have no fasting instructions remaining. Avoid driving, climbing, or strenuous activity while light-headed. Keep pressure on the puncture site as instructed and watch for continued bleeding or increasing swelling. For future tests, mention the previous reaction, ask to lie down, and check whether fasting is truly required. Keep your appointment results so a clinician can interpret them alongside your symptoms.

Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe headache, trouble breathing, one-sided weakness, confusion, repeated fainting, or an injury from falling. Contact the testing service or a clinician if bleeding will not stop with firm pressure, the arm becomes increasingly painful or swollen, or dizziness persists despite rest and fluids. Fever, a spreading red area, or pus at the puncture site also needs review.
