Feeling cold after hysterectomy

Temperature changes can occur after anaesthesia, surgery, being still for a long time, or receiving medicines. A brief feeling of cold may improve with blankets, fluids, and gradual movement. Chills can also signal infection, especially when paired with feeling unwell, a raised temperature, increasing pelvic or abdominal pain, foul-smelling discharge, painful urination, or redness and drainage around an incision. The reason for the hysterectomy, such as fibroids, endometriosis, or a womb condition, does not by itself explain new chills after surgery.

Check your temperature if you feel shivery, follow the discharge instructions, drink as advised, and keep the wound clean and dry. Take prescribed medicines as directed and avoid strenuous activity until your surgical team says it is appropriate. Record when the cold feeling occurs and whether it follows medication. Call the surgical team if chills recur or do not settle, even if your temperature seems normal.

Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, heavy vaginal bleeding, severe worsening pain, or a swollen painful leg. Contact your surgical team promptly for fever, repeated chills, vomiting, inability to pass urine, or a wound that becomes red, hot, swollen, or leaky.
