Febrile seizure side effects and recovery

A child may be tired, unsettled, confused, or briefly weak after the shaking stops. Their breathing and skin colour should return to normal, and awareness should gradually improve. Fever-related illness can also cause poor appetite, aches, vomiting, or dehydration, so the recovery period includes watching the illness as well as the seizure.

A short febrile seizure does not by itself mean brain damage or epilepsy. However, a one-sided movement pattern, prolonged reduced awareness, repeated seizures, or weakness that persists is not something to dismiss as an ordinary recovery effect. The clinician needs the full sequence and a physical examination.

Keep the child on their side if sleepy or vomiting, stay close, and check that they are breathing normally. Offer small amounts of fluid only when fully awake and able to swallow. Follow the clinician’s instructions for fever discomfort, and avoid forcing food or drink while the child is drowsy.

Write down the start and stop times, temperature if measured, movements, breathing changes, and how quickly the child became responsive. This record helps distinguish expected recovery from a new problem. Arrange follow-up after an episode so the cause of the fever and the need for a safety plan can be reviewed.

Call emergency services if another seizure lasts five minutes, repeats before recovery, affects breathing, or causes injury. Seek urgent care if the child cannot be woken normally, remains confused, develops a stiff neck, severe headache, breathing trouble, persistent weakness, or a non-fading rash. These symptoms may point to a serious infection such as meningitis or another urgent condition.

Ask which recovery changes are expected for your child, when fluids and food are safe, and whether follow-up testing is needed.
