Short answer

Fatigue during the first trimester is tiredness driven by early pregnancy hormones, body changes and often disrupted sleep.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be happening

Early pregnancy can increase sleepiness and make familiar activities feel demanding. Nausea, vomiting, appetite changes, emotional strain and needing to urinate at night can compound the effect. Fatigue may be strongest at some points and ease later, but there is wide normal variation.

Tiredness alone cannot confirm that a pregnancy is progressing normally or identify a complication. Anaemia, dehydration, infection, thyroid problems and low mood are alternative or additional explanations. Mention symptoms that are new, intense or interfering with daily life during antenatal care.

Managing early tiredness

Allow extra sleep where possible and break chores into smaller tasks. Keep water nearby and take frequent sips, especially if nausea is present. Small, regular meals can be easier than large meals; choose foods you tolerate and ask for nutrition advice if vomiting persists. Gentle movement may help some people, but reduce exertion when dizzy or unwell. Use only pregnancy-appropriate medicines and supplements after professional advice.

Warning signs

Contact a clinician promptly for fatigue with repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, breathlessness, palpitations, fever, painful urination, bleeding or significant abdominal pain. Seek emergency care for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, confusion or heavy bleeding. A sudden major change in how you feel also merits a call to your pregnancy team.

Questions for your appointment

Ask whether your hydration, nutrition, medicines and sleep need review, whether Anaemia testing is suitable, and which symptoms should prompt an urgent call.

Questions people ask

Is first-trimester fatigue linked to nausea?

Yes. Nausea, vomiting and reduced intake can worsen tiredness by disrupting sleep and hydration.

Should I push through exercise when exhausted?

No. Choose gentle activity only when you feel well and your pregnancy team has not advised restrictions.
