Short answer

Fatigue in pregnancy is a persistent feeling of low energy or exhaustion that can arise as the body adapts to pregnancy, but severe, sudden, or worsening tiredness deserves medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is fatigue in pregnancy?

Fatigue in pregnancy is a persistent feeling of low energy or exhaustion that can arise as the body adapts to pregnancy, but severe, sudden, or worsening tiredness deserves medical assessment. It may make everyday tasks, concentration, exercise, or staying awake feel harder than usual. Fatigue is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, so its meaning depends on how it started and what other symptoms are present.

What pregnancy fatigue can mean

Pregnancy changes can affect sleep, appetite, circulation, mood, and the effort required for normal activities. Nausea, discomfort, frequent urination, stress, and interrupted sleep can all leave you drained. Anaemia is another possible contributor, particularly when tiredness occurs with paleness, dizziness, headaches, a racing heartbeat, or breathlessness. A clinician may consider other explanations, including an infection, dehydration, thyroid problems, or an underlying condition, when fatigue is persistent or out of proportion to your circumstances.

The timing and pattern are useful clues: note whether the tiredness is present after sleep, limits normal activities, follows vomiting or diarrhoea, or comes with low mood or loss of interest. Do not assume that every episode of fatigue is simply part of pregnancy.

What you can do

Prioritise sleep and rest, and accept practical help with meals, housework, or childcare when available. Eat regular, nourishing meals and keep fluids nearby; if nausea makes this difficult, take small amounts frequently. Gentle movement, such as a comfortable walk, may support sleep and energy when your maternity clinician has not advised activity restrictions. Keep a brief record of your sleep, meals, fluids, symptoms, and any medicines or supplements. Arrange a pregnancy check if fatigue persists, interferes with basic activities, or does not improve with rest. Do not start iron or other supplements without advice, because the cause should be confirmed and treatment chosen safely.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for fatigue with chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, fainting, confusion, a severe headache, heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or an inability to keep fluids down. Contact your maternity team promptly if tiredness is sudden or rapidly worsening, or if it comes with fever, painful urination, marked dizziness, palpitations, or reduced fetal movement once you have been told to monitor movements. For ongoing tiredness without these warning signs, book an appointment so a clinician can review your symptoms and decide whether an examination or blood tests are needed.

Questions for your doctor or midwife

Ask: Could anaemia, dehydration, an infection, or another health problem be contributing to my fatigue? Should I have blood tests or a urine test? Are my current medicines and supplements appropriate in pregnancy? What level of activity, rest, and fluid intake is suitable for me? Which symptoms should prompt same-day advice?
