What should you know about fat cyst under skin?

An epidermoid cyst is a sac beneath the skin that can contain keratin, a thick skin protein. It may feel smooth, rounded and movable, and some cysts have a small opening at the surface. A fatty lump such as a lipoma, an inflamed follicle, an abscess or another type of skin lump can feel similar. A skin lump therefore does not by itself establish a cyst diagnosis.

Cysts may stay quiet, become irritated after friction, or inflame and enlarge. Squeezing or piercing one can push material deeper, introduce bacteria and make later treatment more difficult.

Arrange a clinical examination for a persistent, growing or bothersome lump. Until then, keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and reduce rubbing from clothing or equipment. If it opens, cover it with a clean dressing and wash your hands before and after changing it. Treatment depends on the finding: an inflamed cyst may be managed differently from an abscess, while a recurrent cyst may need removal of its capsule to reduce recurrence.

Seek prompt care if the lump becomes painful, red, hot, rapidly larger, drains pus, or comes with fever or feeling unwell. Urgent assessment is appropriate for spreading redness, severe pain, or swelling near the eye, mouth or genitals. A firm fixed lump, a lump that keeps changing, or one that does not settle also deserves examination rather than home treatment.
