Fasting lipids blood test: what should you know?

A lipids panel can include total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. The fasting instruction is intended to reduce the effect of a recent meal on some measurements, especially triglycerides, though not every person needs fasting. The numbers are considered with blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, kidney function, family history, and any previous heart or blood vessel problems. This test does not identify the cause of tiredness, fever, or weight change. Those symptoms can have many explanations, including anaemia, chronic kidney disease, coeliac disease, Crohn's disease, or an infection, so they need their own clinical assessment.

Ask the laboratory what you may drink and whether your usual medicines should be taken. Plain water may be allowed, but coffee, juice, milk, sweets, gum, and some supplements can conflict with instructions. People using diabetes medicines need personalised advice because skipping food can lower blood glucose. Wear comfortable clothing, tell the phlebotomist if you have previously fainted, and remain seated briefly after the draw if you feel light-headed. If you ate during the requested fasting window, report it rather than guessing; the clinician may decide whether the sample remains useful or should be repeated.

Tell staff immediately if fasting brings sweating, shaking, confusion, severe weakness, or a feeling that you may faint. Get emergency help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or sudden neurological symptoms. Contact your clinician about an abnormal result at the planned review, especially if you have known diabetes, kidney disease, or a strong family history of cardiovascular disease. Do not interpret a single result as proof of illness or change prescribed treatment without advice.
