What should you know about a fast-growing lump on the neck?

A neck lump may be a swollen lymph node, cyst, salivary-gland problem, thyroid-related swelling, or another mass. Infection can make a node tender and may occur with fever or a sore throat. A fast-growing lump can also be a presentation of a cancer, but the lump itself does not establish that diagnosis.

The location, texture, mobility, growth pattern, and nearby symptoms help guide assessment. The clinician may examine the mouth, throat, skin, thyroid, and lymph-node areas, then arrange imaging or a needle sample if needed. In a child, evaluation is adapted to age and development.

Book a prompt appointment and record when you first noticed the lump, how quickly it changed, and whether it is painful. Mention fever, recent infection, dental problems, voice change, swallowing difficulty, night sweats, or weight loss. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage the area, as this can irritate the tissue.

Bring a list of medicines and prior scans. The next step may be observation for a clearly infectious cause, imaging, or tissue sampling. If a tumour is confirmed, treatment may include tumour removal surgery or other specialist care based on its type and origin.

Seek urgent care if the swelling causes difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, a muffled voice, severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, or marked weakness. Prompt assessment is also needed for a hard or fixed lump, a lump that continues enlarging, or one accompanied by persistent voice or swallowing changes.

Ask which structures may be involved, whether imaging or a needle sample is appropriate, how soon results will be available, and what changes should trigger earlier review. If cancer is considered, ask what information is needed to identify its origin and plan treatment.
