Fasciotomy long-term side effects

A fasciotomy scar may feel firm, tight, itchy, or sensitive as it matures. The skin around it can remain less sensitive or unusually sensitive if small nerves were affected by the original injury or surgery. Muscle damage, tendon irritation, bone injury, or nerve involvement may also influence strength and movement.

Some people notice reduced ankle or knee flexibility, changes in walking, swelling after activity, or discomfort around the scar. These symptoms do not automatically mean the operation failed. Recovery reflects the pressure episode as well as the incision, wound closure, and any associated injury.

Attend follow-up visits and use physiotherapy to work on joint range, strength, balance, walking mechanics, and gradual activity. Once the wound is fully healed and your clinician agrees, scar mobilisation and desensitisation may help. Supportive footwear, pacing, and a written home exercise plan can make daily practice easier.

Tell your team if pain limits sleep, sensation changes interfere with safety, or weakness affects stairs or walking. They can check the wound, nerves, joints, and muscles and adjust rehabilitation. Seek urgent care for a sudden increase in swelling or pain, new numbness or weakness, loss of movement, a cool or pale foot, or severe pain after a new injury. Contact your surgical team promptly for a reopening wound, pus-like drainage, spreading redness, or fever.
