What should you know about fasciotomy hand?

Swelling after a crush injury, fracture, bleeding, or other trauma can increase pressure within the hand. Firm surrounding tissue limits expansion, so pressure may interfere with small blood vessels, nerves, and muscle. The surgeon releases the restricting tissue through incisions chosen for the involved spaces. The hand may need a temporary wound covering, later closure, or additional wound care while swelling settles.

The urgency and surgical approach depend on examination findings, circulation, sensation, movement, and the injury itself. A fasciotomy is not the same as treatment for ordinary hand stiffness or uncomplicated soreness.

Keep the hand positioned and dressed as instructed, and attend every wound review. Do not squeeze, lift, or use the hand beyond the limits set by the surgical team. A hand therapist may introduce carefully timed finger, thumb, wrist, and forearm movements to reduce stiffness and protect function. Later work can include swelling control, scar management, grip, fine motor tasks, and return to work or self-care.

Seek urgent help for rapidly increasing pain or tightness, new numbness, inability to move a finger, fingers that are cold or unusually pale, uncontrolled bleeding, or sudden loss of hand function. Contact the team promptly for fever, spreading redness, worsening drainage, or wound separation.

Ask which compartments were released, how to position the hand, when therapy and finger movement should start, and which dressing changes are expected. Ask what sensation and movement recovery may be monitored and who to contact outside clinic hours.
