What should you know about fasciotomy foot?

The foot contains muscles, nerves, and vessels within spaces bounded by firm tissue. After trauma, a fracture, bleeding, or substantial swelling, pressure can rise inside these spaces. A surgeon opens the restricting tissue through carefully selected incisions. Because swelling may remain, the wound can require temporary dressings, a later closure, or another reconstructive step.

This is emergency or urgent trauma care rather than a routine treatment for everyday foot pain. The surgical team decides which compartments need release by examining the foot and considering the injury, circulation, sensation, and pressure concerns.

Follow instructions about elevation, dressings, weight-bearing, splints, and medication. Keep the wound dry or covered exactly as directed and never adjust a tight dressing yourself. At the permitted stage, therapy helps preserve ankle and toe movement, manage swelling, rebuild strength, and retrain walking. Use crutches or another aid correctly until the team confirms that loading is safe. Check the toes for movement, sensation, warmth, and colour as instructed.

Get urgent help if pain escalates suddenly, the dressing becomes very tight, toes become cold, pale, blue, numb, or difficult to move, or bleeding soaks through the dressing. Fever, increasing redness, pus-like drainage, or a wound that opens also needs prompt review.

Ask which foot compartments were opened, how long non-weight-bearing may be needed, how the wound will be closed or dressed, and what toe or skin changes need immediate attention. Ask when walking practice and scar treatment can begin.
