What should you know about familial goitre?

Familial goitre means thyroid swelling occurs in a family pattern, but the cause still needs individual assessment. Relatives may share susceptibility to thyroid inflammation, hormone disorders, or nodules, while diet, medicines, and environmental factors can also contribute.

A goitre can occur when the thyroid is underactive, overactive, or producing hormones within the usual range. Hyperthyroidism may cause palpitations, tremor, heat intolerance, or weight loss; hypothyroidism may cause tiredness, feeling cold, constipation, or dry skin. Some goitres are smooth and diffuse, while others contain nodules, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a GP consultation and mention relatives with goitre, thyroid disease, thyroid surgery, or thyroid cancer. The clinician may examine the neck, review symptoms and medicines, and order a thyroid function test. Further imaging or specialist review may be considered if the swelling is uneven, enlarging, or affecting swallowing or breathing.

Seek prompt assessment for a new or growing neck swelling, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or a sensation of pressure when lying down. Get urgent help for sudden breathing difficulty, severe throat tightness, or rapidly increasing swelling.

Ask whether your thyroid is enlarged evenly or contains a nodule, whether hormone levels are abnormal, and whether ultrasound or specialist review is needed. Ask how family history changes testing for relatives and which symptoms should trigger earlier review.
