What should you know about a false-positive DEXA scan?

A false-positive DEXA scan means the reading suggests weak bones even though the measurement may not reflect your true bone strength. DEXA results are measurements that need context, including the scanned site, positioning, machine quality, and your medical history.

Arthritis, spinal curvature, metal from previous surgery, a vertebral fracture, or movement during the scan can affect some measurements. Differences between machines or scanning sites can also make results difficult to compare. Hormonal conditions such as premature ovarian insufficiency may influence genuine bone loss, so an unexpected result should be checked rather than dismissed.

Ask which bone sites were measured and whether the images were technically adequate. The clinician may compare the result with earlier scans from the same machine, review medicines and fracture history, or arrange a repeat scan or other assessment. Do not start, stop, or change bone medicines based on a single unexpected result without clinical advice.

Arrange prompt medical review after a new fall with significant pain, sudden back pain, loss of height, or difficulty standing, because these can occur with a fracture. Seek urgent care for severe pain after an injury, inability to bear weight, or new weakness or numbness.

Ask whether arthritis or spinal changes affected the reading, whether the scan used an appropriate site, and how the result compares with your previous test. Also ask whether a repeat measurement, fracture assessment, vitamin review, or treatment discussion is needed.
