What should you know about facial tissue expander?

A surgeon places the expander beneath the skin near the area needing reconstruction. At follow-up visits, sterile fluid may be added through a valve, slowly increasing the device's volume and encouraging the overlying tissue to stretch. The expanded tissue can later help cover or shape a reconstructed area. The timing and amount of expansion depend on the site, skin condition, healing and the planned operation.

Tightness, pressure, tenderness and visible fullness can occur as the skin adapts. The device is not the final reconstruction, and its presence can affect sleep, movement, appearance and daily routines.

Keep scheduled reviews so the surgical team can assess the skin and adjust the expansion plan. Follow wound-care instructions, protect the area from pressure and avoid changing dressings or touching the valve unless instructed. Report increasing pain, redness, warmth, drainage, skin thinning, fever or a sudden change in the device's shape. Take medicines only as directed and attend promptly if the expander becomes exposed.

Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening tenderness, spreading redness, new drainage, fever, skin colour change or a device that feels suddenly tighter. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, breathing difficulty or signs of a serious allergic reaction. These problems can need assessment before the next planned expansion.

Ask where the expander will sit, how often fluid will be added, how long the process may take, which activities need adjusting, how the final reconstruction will be planned, and whom to contact outside clinic hours.
