Facial swelling without pain: what to know

Puffiness that is most noticeable after waking may relate to fluid movement during sleep. Angioedema may cause sudden swelling without soreness, often around the eyes or lips. Sinusitis can produce pressure or fullness even before pain develops. Chronic kidney disease is one possible contributor to persistent puffiness, while a new product, medicine, or food may point toward an allergic reaction. Painless does not mean the cause is harmless.

Take a photograph and record the time of day, duration, recent meals, medicines, skin products, and any nasal or dental symptoms. Remove a suspected cosmetic or other new exposure. A cool compress may ease puffiness. Seek a clinician’s advice if the swelling lasts, repeatedly returns, affects one side, or comes with redness, warmth, fever, vision changes, or reduced urine.

Call emergency services for swelling that progresses to the lips, tongue, or throat, or for breathing trouble, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, or collapse. This pattern can indicate anaphylaxis even when the first facial swelling was painless. Follow any personal emergency allergy plan while help is coming.
