What should you know about facial PDO threads?

Short answer

Facial PDO threads are absorbable sutures placed beneath the skin to support selected tissues; results, recovery and risks depend on technique and suitability.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the treatment works

Polydioxanone is a material used in absorbable medical sutures. In a facial thread procedure, a trained clinician places smooth or barbed threads through small entry points under the skin. Some designs are intended mainly for collagen stimulation, while barbed designs can provide a lifting effect by engaging tissue. The change is usually subtle and does not replace surgery. Bruising, swelling, tenderness, tightness, dimpling or asymmetry can occur during healing.

Preparing and recovering

Choose a qualified medical practitioner who can assess skin quality, facial movement, medicines and your goals. Discuss previous procedures, bleeding problems, active skin infection and medicines or supplements that affect clotting. Follow the individual aftercare plan; it may include gentle cleansing, avoiding pressure on the treated area, limiting strenuous activity for a short period and delaying facial massage or dental work. Do not pull or trim a visible thread yourself.

When to contact the clinic

Contact the treating clinic for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, marked swelling, a thread becoming exposed, persistent dimpling or new facial weakness. Urgent assessment is needed for severe allergic symptoms, rapidly worsening swelling, vision changes or difficulty breathing. A review can distinguish expected healing from infection, migration or another complication.

Questions for your doctor

Which thread design suits my concern? Where will the entry points and threads sit? What improvement is realistic, how long may swelling last, and how would an exposed or displaced thread be managed?

Questions people ask

Are facial PDO threads the same as a facelift?

No. Threads provide support through small entry points and a healing response; a facelift is a surgical operation that removes or repositions tissue.

Can PDO threads be removed?

A clinician may be able to remove or manage a problematic thread, but the approach depends on its position, design and the surrounding tissue.
