What should you know about facial hijama?

Short answer

Facial hijama involves cupping on facial skin and should be considered only after discussing risks with a qualified practitioner.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What facial hijama involves

Hijama commonly refers to cupping therapy. A cup creates suction on the skin; wet cupping also involves small skin punctures, while dry cupping does not. Facial skin has visible blood vessels and sits close to the eyes, so marks, bruising, irritation, burns, infection, and pigment changes are possible concerns. Cupping should not be presented as a replacement for assessment of Upper Back Pain or Back Muscle Spasm, and facial treatment does not address every source of pain or swelling.

Before and after treatment

Choose a practitioner who explains the technique, obtains consent, uses clean or single-use equipment, and asks about medicines and health conditions. Do not apply cups over broken skin, an active rash, infection, prominent veins, or areas close to the eye unless a suitably trained clinician specifically advises it. Afterward, keep the area clean and watch for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, swelling, or worsening pain. Avoid rubbing or covering irritated skin with strong products.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for eye pain or vision change, facial weakness, trouble breathing, or rapidly increasing facial swelling. Contact a clinician promptly if a treated area becomes hot, increasingly painful, drains pus, or you develop fever. Seek assessment for persistent upper-back symptoms, unexplained weakness, numbness, or pain after an injury rather than relying on cupping alone.

Questions for your doctor or practitioner

Ask whether cupping is appropriate for your goal, whether dry or wet technique is being proposed, how the practitioner controls infection risk, what skin changes are expected, and how soon to report a reaction. Discuss blood-thinning medicines, bleeding disorders, pregnancy, diabetes, and skin conditions.

Questions people ask

Is facial hijama suitable for everyone?

No. Suitability depends on skin health, medicines, bleeding risk, and the treatment goal.

Do facial hijama marks need medical care?

Expected marks should settle, but worsening redness, warmth, pain, drainage, fever, or eye symptoms need medical advice.
