Facial cellulitis complications: what to watch for

An untreated or worsening infection may spread through deeper tissue, create a collection of pus, or affect structures near the eye. Infection entering the bloodstream can cause sepsis, a medical emergency. Facial swelling may also interfere with eating, drinking, or opening the eye.

Risk is shaped by the infection's location and speed of spread, as well as factors such as diabetes or reduced immune function. A painful, red, swollen area is a symptom pattern that needs assessment; it does not by itself identify which complication is present.

Follow the treatment plan supplied by a clinician, keep review appointments, and monitor the edge of redness and your general wellbeing. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid pressing, puncturing, or applying irritating products to the area. Tell the clinician if you have a wound, bite, dental issue, or athlete's foot that could be an entry point.

If symptoms are not settling or are progressing during treatment, contact the treating service promptly. Type 2 diabetes and immune problems should be disclosed because they can affect monitoring and treatment.

Seek emergency care for eye pain, reduced vision, difficulty moving the eye, severe headache, confusion, collapse, breathing difficulty, or trouble swallowing. A rapidly expanding red area, high fever, shaking chills, severe weakness, or unusual drowsiness may signal sepsis or another deep complication.
