Facial cellulitis: signs and next steps

The affected skin can become warm, red, swollen, and painful, often over one side of the face. The border may expand over time, and fever or feeling unwell can occur. A break in the skin, bite, wound, dental problem, or another infection can provide an entry point; athlete's foot can also create cracks that allow bacteria to enter elsewhere.

Facial redness alone has several possible causes, so an examination is needed. Type 2 diabetes and other conditions that affect immune response can increase concern and influence treatment decisions.

Contact a healthcare service promptly for a new, spreading, hot, tender facial area or associated fever. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and note whether the redness is enlarging. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not share leftover medicine.

A clinician may inspect the skin, look for an entry point, and decide whether oral treatment or hospital care is needed. Do not delay assessment by trying cosmetic creams or home remedies on a worsening infection.

Seek emergency help for swelling near the eye, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, faintness, difficulty breathing, or trouble swallowing. High fever, rapidly spreading redness, marked weakness, or new drowsiness can indicate a serious infection such as sepsis and require immediate attention.

Ask what may have allowed the infection to enter, which symptoms should trigger urgent review, and when improvement should begin after treatment. Mention diabetes, immune conditions, recent wounds, bites, dental symptoms, or athlete's foot.
