Facial Angioedema Images: What to Know

Angioedema often affects the lips, eyelids, cheeks or tongue. The swelling may feel firm, tight or warm and may occur with hives, though hives are not always present. Images can look different depending on skin tone, timing and the area involved. Common triggers include foods, medicines, insect exposures and physical factors; some episodes have no clear trigger.

Note when the swelling began, what areas are affected, and any new food, medicine or exposure. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice, but tell a clinician about every medicine, including pain relievers and blood-pressure treatments. A clinician may recommend an antihistamine treatment for some episodes; oral corticosteroid treatment is reserved for selected situations. Avoid a suspected trigger until you have received guidance.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing, faintness, confusion or trouble swallowing. Seek urgent medical assessment when facial swelling is rapidly increasing, recurrent without explanation, or accompanied by vomiting or widespread hives. A photograph can support the history, but it must not delay emergency care.

Ask whether the episode fits angioedema, which triggers should be recorded, what action plan to follow if the tongue swells, and whether you need an emergency medicine plan. Ask whether relatives or recurring episodes change the evaluation.
