White bumps on the face that are not pimples

Small firm white bumps that do not become inflamed can be milia or closed comedones. Bumps centred on hairs, especially after shaving, can fit folliculitis or razor bumps. Clusters around the mouth with burning or redness can occur with perioral dermatitis, while flushing and persistent sensitivity may accompany rosacea. Acne is also possible, including hormonal acne, but appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the bumps itch, hurt, contain fluid, follow hair removal, or change with cosmetics. A close examination helps separate similar-looking problems and prevents unsuitable treatment.

Cleanse gently, avoid squeezing or scraping, and pause new fragranced or heavy products. Use a non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen. If shaving triggers bumps, use a clean razor, shave in the direction of growth, and avoid repeated passes over irritated skin.

Do not apply steroid cream around the mouth unless a clinician has advised it; it can aggravate some facial rashes. Treatments should match the diagnosis. LED light therapy may be discussed for selected acne-related inflammation, but it is not a universal treatment for every white bump.

Arrange an assessment if bumps persist, spread, recur after shaving, or leave marks, or if you cannot tell whether they are acne or a rash. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, eye symptoms, or painful lesions.

Ask what the bumps are based on their shape and distribution, whether a product or shaving habit is contributing, and which treatment is safe near the eyes or mouth. Ask how long to try the plan before returning for review.
