Face swelling after a facial: what to do

Massage, steam, exfoliation, waxing, needles, or a newly applied product can temporarily irritate the skin. A delayed itchy rash may reflect contact allergy to a fragrance, preservative, peel, dye, or other ingredient. Angioedema causes deeper swelling, often around the eyes or lips, and can occur with allergy. Warmth, increasing pain, pus, or redness spreading from a broken area can fit cellulitis. Sinusitis may cause pressure and swelling around the cheeks or eyes, especially with nasal symptoms.

The timing matters: swelling that begins quickly after a product or procedure is different from swelling that worsens over the following days. Photograph the area and keep the product names or treatment details.

Stop using the new product and gently rinse away residue if this does not increase pain. Apply a cool, clean compress and keep the head raised. Avoid heat, scrubs, makeup, and further facial treatments until the skin is assessed. Contact the practitioner for the ingredient list and aftercare instructions, and ask a pharmacist about suitable symptom relief.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or mouth. Seek same-day care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, spreading redness, pus, eye pain, or vision change. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are progressing after a cosmetic treatment.

Ask whether the reaction is irritation, contact allergy, angioedema, or infection; which products to avoid; and whether you need treatment or monitoring for a delayed reaction.
