What should you know about face stretch marks?

Stretch marks develop when the deeper skin is remodelled faster than its supporting fibres can adapt. They may begin pink, red, purple or darker than surrounding skin and later become paler or slightly indented. On the face, rapid growth, weight change, hormonal shifts, muscle-building, prolonged corticosteroid exposure or conditions affecting hormone balance can be relevant. Facial lines are not always stretch marks, so a clinician should check a new, widespread or unusual pattern.

The location, colour, texture and timing help guide diagnosis. A sudden eruption accompanied by easy bruising, weakness or other body changes deserves medical review rather than cosmetic treatment alone.

Keep the skin moisturised and avoid scratching. A dermatologist can review possible triggers and explain whether observation is reasonable or whether a procedure could improve texture or colour. Options may include microneedling, fractional laser treatment, RF microneedling or carboxytherapy, selected according to skin tone, mark maturity, depth and risk of pigment change. Procedures often require staged care and healing time; sun protection is particularly important afterward. Do not apply prescription steroid creams to the face unless specifically directed.

Arrange an appointment if marks appear suddenly, spread quickly, follow prolonged steroid use, or occur with unexplained bruising, muscle weakness, headaches or changes in body shape. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, severe pain, blistering or signs of infection such as warmth, pus and fever.
