What should you know about face spots from sun?

Sun can stimulate pigment production, leaving flat tan or brown areas, especially on frequently exposed skin. It can also aggravate redness, dryness and inflammation. A spot that is raised, tender, scaly, crusted or itchy may not be simple sun-related pigmentation. Pimple-like bumps can reflect acne, folliculitis, rosacea or perioral dermatitis; the distribution around the mouth, hair follicles or central face can help a clinician distinguish them. A symptom does not identify one condition by itself.

Note whether the marks appeared after a new product, medicine, hair-removal routine or prolonged outdoor exposure. Photos taken in consistent lighting can help show whether colour, border or size is changing.

Use shade, protective clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed for your skin. Choose gentle cleansing and moisturising, and avoid picking, scrubbing or applying untested lightening products. A dermatologist can examine the spots and decide whether treatment should focus on pigment, inflammation or a different diagnosis. Do not start a strong peel or light-based procedure until the cause is clear, because irritation can deepen discolouration in some skin tones. Treatments such as LED light therapy may be considered for selected inflammatory problems, not every mark.

Book a timely skin assessment if one spot is changing in shape, colour or texture, bleeds, repeatedly crusts, becomes painful, or fails to settle. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading facial swelling, blistering, eye involvement, fever or breathing difficulty. These features need assessment based on severity, not on whether the spots followed sun exposure.
