Face Skin Tags and Moles: What to Know

A skin tag is often soft and attached by a narrow stalk, while a mole is usually a more solid, pigmented or skin-coloured spot that may be flat or raised. Appearance alone cannot confirm what a changing growth is, especially on the face.

A clinician may examine the surface closely and ask when it appeared, whether it has changed, and whether it catches on clothing or is repeatedly irritated. Removing a growth for appearance is different from investigating one with concerning features.

Do not shave, snip, freeze, or burn a facial growth yourself. Home removal can cause bleeding, infection, scarring, or delay assessment of a lesion that needs closer examination.

Depending on the diagnosis, options can include surgical skin tag removal, cryotherapy, or electrosurgery. The clinician selects the method according to the growth, its position, desired cosmetic result, and whether a sample should be examined. Use sun protection while the area heals.

Arrange prompt assessment for a mole or tag that is changing in size, shape, colour, or surface; becomes persistently itchy or painful; bleeds; crusts; or develops an irregular edge. After removal, seek review for spreading redness, discharge, fever, or pain that is getting worse.
