Face hijama: what to know

Hijama is a form of cupping. Dry cupping places cups on the skin to create suction; wet cupping adds small skin punctures before suction. On the face, skin is close to the eyes and contains delicate blood vessels, so technique and hygiene matter. Temporary circular marks, tenderness, bruising, or mild irritation can occur. Cupping should not be presented as a replacement for diagnosis or treatment of a medical condition, and facial pain may have causes unrelated to muscle tension.

Discuss the treatment with a qualified healthcare professional first, especially if you use blood-thinning medicine, have a bleeding disorder, active skin disease, diabetes, or an infection. Choose a practitioner who uses sterile, single-use equipment for wet hijama and avoids the eyelids and damaged skin. Keep treated areas clean, avoid rubbing them, and follow aftercare instructions. Do not apply unapproved products over broken skin. Seek advice if marks become increasingly painful or inflamed.

Obtain urgent medical help for eye pain, vision changes, heavy bleeding, facial swelling, trouble breathing, or rapidly worsening redness. Arrange prompt review for pus, fever, spreading warmth, severe pain, or a wound that is not healing. If you have back muscle spasm or upper-back pain, explain the symptoms clearly rather than assuming facial cupping addresses their cause.

Ask whether cupping is suitable for your skin and medicines, what infection-control steps will be used, and which facial areas will be avoided. Ask what improvement is realistic and what alternative treatment is available if pain continues.
