What should you know about face dandruff?

Dandruff is commonly associated with flaking from the scalp, but similar scaling can affect the eyebrows, sides of the nose, beard area, ears, or hairline. The skin may feel itchy, dry, greasy, or mildly inflamed. Facial scale often comes and goes rather than behaving like a single wound.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a related inflammatory condition that commonly affects oil-rich areas. Other causes of facial flaking include irritation from skincare, contact allergy, psoriasis, or infection, so location and appearance help guide the assessment.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and avoid rubbing scale off with nails or rough cloths. Use a plain moisturiser suited to sensitive facial skin, and pause newly introduced fragranced or exfoliating products while the skin settles. Keep scalp and facial products away from the eyes.

A clinician may suggest medicated shampoo treatment for scalp involvement or topical antifungal treatment when yeast-related inflammation is suspected. Use any medicated product exactly as directed, because facial skin can be more sensitive than the scalp.

Arrange an assessment when flaking persists, spreads, repeatedly returns, or comes with marked redness, thick scale, hair loss, pain, or oozing. Seek prompt care for swelling around the eyes, crusting near the eyes, or a rapidly worsening rash.

Ask whether the pattern fits dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, whether your scalp also needs treatment, and how long to use a medicated product. Mention itch, new cosmetics, hair products, and any history of sensitive skin.
