Short answer

Bloating can come from digestion, constipation, food intolerance, or infection, while facial puffiness may need a separate assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible reasons

Abdominal bloating may follow swallowed air, fizzy drinks, constipation, or a change in eating pattern. It can also occur with food intolerance, lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, or infections such as giardiasis. Helicobacter pylori infection may cause upper abdominal discomfort and fullness. A face that looks puffy can reflect sleep disruption, allergy, fluid retention, or another condition, so it should not automatically be attributed to gas. Timing, meals, bowel changes, and associated symptoms help separate these possibilities.

How to investigate it

Keep a short symptom diary covering meals, bowel movements, sleep, medicines, and whether swelling changes by morning or evening. Eat slowly and take regular movement breaks. Avoid cutting out several food groups at once; doing so can hide the trigger and make nutrition harder. A clinician can decide whether an examination, blood test, stool test, or guided dietary review is appropriate. Nutrition counselling may help when food patterns are difficult to interpret.

Warning signs

Seek emergency care for facial swelling with throat tightness, wheezing, faintness, or difficulty breathing. Obtain prompt medical advice for severe pain, repeated vomiting, blood in stool, marked abdominal enlargement, dehydration, or inability to pass stool or gas. Make an appointment if symptoms persist, recur frequently, disturb sleep, or occur with ongoing diarrhoea, constipation, fatigue, or unplanned weight change.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the face and abdominal symptoms could be unrelated, which features suggest an intolerance or infection, and whether testing is needed before changing your diet. Ask which over-the-counter products are appropriate for your symptoms and medicines.
