Face bloating in pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Pregnancy can cause abdominal bloating through digestive changes, but new facial swelling needs pregnancy-aware medical advice.

Understanding the symptoms
Hormonal changes in pregnancy can slow digestion, leading to fullness, gas, or constipation. Food intolerance, lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, or an infection can also cause abdominal bloating. Facial puffiness is different from abdominal bloating. Sudden swelling of the face or hands, particularly with a severe headache, visual changes, pain below the ribs, or feeling very unwell, should be assessed urgently because pregnancy can change the significance of swelling.
Practical measures
Tell your maternity team about new facial swelling, even if your abdomen also feels bloated. Eat slowly, choose smaller meals, drink fluids as advised by your care team, and use gentle activity if it is comfortable. Fibre can help constipation, but increase it gradually and ask before using a laxative, supplement, or herbal product. Do not begin an elimination diet or take digestive medicine without checking pregnancy suitability with a clinician or pharmacist.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity service urgently for sudden facial or hand swelling with severe headache, visual disturbance, upper abdominal pain, breathlessness, or feeling faint. Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips or tongue, wheezing, or trouble breathing. Arrange review for persistent bloating with vomiting, severe pain, bleeding, dehydration, or inability to pass stool or gas.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms are mainly digestive, whether your blood pressure and urine need checking, and which medicines are safe at your stage of pregnancy. Ask how to manage constipation or a suspected food trigger without reducing essential nutrients.

Questions people ask
Is facial puffiness the same as pregnancy bloating?
No. Bloating usually refers to abdominal fullness, while new facial puffiness should be discussed with the maternity team.
Can I take an over-the-counter bloating remedy while pregnant?
Check the specific product with a pharmacist or clinician first, because suitability varies by ingredient and pregnancy stage.
