Eyelid melanoma symptoms: signs to recognise

A melanoma of the eyelid can present as a dark or unevenly coloured spot, a patch with an irregular edge, or a mark that changes in size or shape. Other possible signs include bleeding, crusting, ulceration, persistent irritation, or eyelashes disappearing from one area. These symptoms have several possible explanations, and their presence does not establish melanoma. An examination may include magnified inspection and tissue testing.

Arrange a dermatology or ophthalmology appointment for a new, changing or non-healing eyelid lesion. Avoid picking, scraping or applying strong products near the eye. Take a dated photograph and note bleeding, tenderness, growth and any visual symptoms. If testing confirms melanoma, care may involve Surgical Excision or other Skin Cancer Surgery, with staging decisions guided by the pathology.

Seek prompt review when a mark changes, bleeds repeatedly, forms a persistent crust, causes local lash loss, or does not heal. Seek urgent eye assessment for reduced vision, severe eye pain, rapid swelling, double vision, or trouble closing the eye. Call emergency services for sudden weakness, confusion, collapse or seizure; these symptoms require immediate evaluation regardless of the eyelid finding.

Ask whether the lesion needs biopsy, what other diagnoses are being considered, and whether an eye specialist should examine the eyelid margin or eye surface. Ask what changes should trigger earlier contact and how the result will guide surgery, staging and follow-up.
