Eyelid malignant melanoma: what to know

Melanoma is a cancer of pigment-producing cells. On the eyelid, it may appear as a changing dark spot, an unevenly coloured patch, or a pigmented area that extends onto surrounding skin. Appearance cannot confirm the diagnosis; a clinician may examine the eyelid closely and remove or sample tissue for laboratory assessment. Staging considers the lesion and whether nearby lymph nodes or distant sites need evaluation.

Arrange an appointment with a dermatologist, ophthalmologist, or specialist skin-cancer team. Bring photographs showing earlier appearance, if available, and mention changes in size, shape, colour, bleeding or crusting. Possible care includes Surgical Excision, Skin Cancer Surgery, or Tumour Removal Surgery. A Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy may be discussed when staging calls for information about nearby lymphatic drainage. Treatment plans depend on the biopsy and examination.

Seek prompt medical review for a new or changing eyelid mark, repeated bleeding, a sore that does not heal, loss of eyelashes at one spot, or a lump that grows. Seek urgent eye care if swelling or a lesion affects vision, causes significant eye pain, or prevents the eye from closing. New severe headache, weakness, confusion or seizure needs emergency assessment because these symptoms can have many causes, including serious disease.

Ask whether a biopsy is needed, what the pathology describes, whether the eyelid margin or eye surface is involved, and which specialists will coordinate care. You can also ask how the procedure may affect eyelid movement, lashes and appearance, and what follow-up will monitor for recurrence or new lesions.
