Eyebrow folliculitis: what should you know?

It may look like small red or skin-coloured bumps centred on hairs, sometimes with a white head. The area can itch, feel sore, or become crusted. Plucking, waxing, threading, rubbing, occlusive cosmetics, and bacteria entering irritated skin can contribute. Similar-looking bumps may be ingrown hairs, acne, or another rash, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Pause plucking, waxing, threading, and brow makeup until the skin settles. Cleanse gently, avoid squeezing or digging for trapped hairs, and use a clean towel and clean grooming tools. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy when a local bacterial infection is suspected, or antibiotic therapy for skin infection when treatment needs are broader. Use these medicines only as directed.

Arrange medical review if bumps spread, recur, become increasingly painful, drain pus, form a crust, or do not improve with gentle care. Seek prompt help if redness or swelling moves toward the eyelid, or if you develop fever, eye pain, or vision changes.
