Eyeball Stye: What Should You Know?

A stye, also called a hordeolum, is a localised inflamed lump at the eyelid edge or within the eyelid. It may be sore, swollen, red, and watery, and can make blinking uncomfortable. Discharge or more widespread redness may point to another eye problem, so the pattern matters. A lump that is firm and not tender may be a different eyelid blockage rather than an active stye.

Apply a clean warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating it through the day if comfortable. Wash hands before touching the area and keep towels, face cloths, and cosmetics personal. Do not squeeze, pierce, or pop the lump. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the eyelid has settled. Clean any crust gently without scraping the skin.

A GP consultation can help if the lump is not settling, keeps returning, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Treatment depends on the examination and may not require medicine.

Seek urgent assessment for reduced vision, severe eye pain, pain with eye movement, rapidly spreading swelling or redness, fever, or swelling that affects the cheek or the area around the eye. Arrange a review if the lump lasts, becomes increasingly painful, drains repeatedly, or affects vision. Do not delay care for a child who seems unwell or cannot open the eye.
