Eyeball Headache: What Should You Know?

Eye strain can cause aching, focusing difficulty, or forehead discomfort after close work or screens. Nasal congestion and facial pressure may occur with a common cold, allergic rhinitis, or chronic sinusitis. Dehydration, heat exhaustion, and viral illness can also contribute to headache. Eye pain with redness, light sensitivity, discharge, or reduced vision needs a direct eye assessment because the eye itself may be involved.

Describe whether pain is deep, surface-level, throbbing, sharp, or pressure-like; whether it is one-sided; and whether eye movement, light, coughing, or bending changes it.

Rest in a comfortably lit room, pause close visual work, and use regular screen breaks when you return to it. Drink fluids and eat normally if you have missed food. Do not press on the eye or use someone else’s eye drops. A simple symptom diary can help connect pain with sleep, screens, nasal symptoms, fever, or a recent illness.

If you wear contact lenses and develop pain or visual change, remove them and seek prompt advice rather than putting them back in.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, vision loss, double vision, a painful red eye, marked light sensitivity, an eye injury, severe vomiting, new weakness, confusion, or a stiff neck with fever. Arrange review when pain persists, repeatedly returns, follows a change in vision, or is not improving with rest. An examination can distinguish eye, sinus, nerve, and general headache causes.
