Watery discharge with itching can occur with allergic conjunctivitis, while thicker or sticky material may accompany conjunctivitis. Swelling may affect the eyelid or the tissues around the eye. A blocked tear duct, contact-lens irritation, or a small eyelid gland infection can also produce similar symptoms. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.
